A Two Person Exhibition by Karin Rosenthal & Ryuijie at Verve Gallery of Photography
Verve Gallery of Photography is pleased to present a two-person exhibition by Karin Rosenthal and Ryuijie. Exhibition will be on view Friday, November 14, 2008 through Saturday January 10, 2009.

Owned by web designer Wilson Scanlan, he founded VERVE Gallery of Photography in 2002 to showcase contemporary fine art photography.
Located in downtown Santa Fe at 219 East Marcy Street, the space includes a large main exhibition gallery which houses current exhibits and a smaller gallery which is dedicated to showing select works from VERVE’s stable of artists.
KARIN ROSENTHAL
Karin Rosenthal will be exhibiting black and white gelatin silver prints that encompass over 20 years of work in the abstract body-as-landscape motif she is well known for developing. This work carved a unique niche for itself in the realm of photographing the nude, as sometimes it is difficult to discern what you are looking at a nude or a landscape.

Rosenthal, a 1967 graduate of Wellesley College, studied photography at RIT and the Boston Museum School and is currently a Visiting Scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center and lives in Watertown, MA.

She has been devoted to photographing the nude in the landscape since 1975 and has taught at the Art Institute of Boston and conducted workshops in figure and landscape for the Cape Cod Photo Workshops.

Rosenthal’s photographs are in several permanent collections including the Boston MFA, Brooklyn Museum, Boston Public Library, International Center of Photography, Polaroid, and the Yale, Fogg, Rose, and Santa Barbara Art Museums.
RYUIJIE
Ryuijie (pronounced Ree-u-gee) will be exhibiting new work from his “Kanchi” series, in collaboration with his assistant, Camille Derendinger. This series depicts moments of life beneath the ocean surface off the central coast of California.

Ryuijie and Derendinger captured these images on grainy film while free diving on a single breath of air. The prints were then created using the platinum palladium process.

Born in Otaru Japan in 1950, Ryuijie moved with his family to the US as a young child. Over the years, Ryuijie has lived in many places. It was in Monterey that an exhibit of Jerry Uelsmann’s Photographs inspired him and propelled him into the practice of fine art black and white photography.

His work has appeared in View Camera, Photovision, Camera and Darkroom, Black & White and Lenswork. He has published three books, Ryuijie: Photographs, Time and Place, and Fragments of Time. Works by Ryuijie can be found in collections worldwide.
