Aqua Tower Hotel and Residential in Chicago by Studio Gang
As an established architecture practices, Studio Gang has won the 2008 Chicago Anthenaeum American architecture award for their creation for Magellan Developments Aqua Hotel and Residential.
While designing the Aqua tower, the Gang considers several criteria such as views, solar shading and function to derive a vertical system of contours, that gives the structure its sculptural form.
The towers vertical topography defined by its outdoor terraces which gradually changed over the length of the tower. These terraces offer a strong connection to the outdoors and allow inhabitants to occupy the building façade and city simultaneously.
The result of these different length of terraces is a highly sculptural building that transforms into a slender rectangle from further away.
