Laurent graduated this spring 2008 from Sheffield Hallam University, England where he gained a BA in Product Design. He is now living in Milan, Italy where Laurent doing his MA at Politecnico di Milano.

One of Laurent product design that I was very impressed with is the Routa Light. Atmospheric moodlight inspired by the Finnish national epic Kalevala (“lands of Kaleva”).

According to Laurent, this light tells the story of the main character Väinämöinen, a Rune and Warlord in this tale. Väinämöinen is most know for his magical power of songs and music which he used to tantalize his listeners using the five stringed Finnish harp called Kantele.

This became the main inspiration for the light picturing the vertical elements of the light as the five strings. The profile of the light changes when viewed from different angles to represent the different characters of Väinämöinen.

From the side, this light has straight 2D shapes showing his straight actions on battlefield whereas at an angle the light appears curvy to emphasize the soft melodies of the music he played.

The choice of materials for this light are wool/felt for what you could call the diffuser and birch ply for the structure. Both materials are 100% recyclable and renewable recourses and so, go well with the close to nature Finnish culture.
