Help get the European Commission to vote YES for a law against illegal logging
My green friends, it is shocking fact that until now there is no law against illegally logged timber in Europe. Every day, a huge amounts of illegal timber are sold in Europe primarily as building materials, or paper products.

If you live in Europe you have probably purchased products made with illegal timber. Not only does illegal logging harm indigenous people in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Indonesia, it is also a major factor of deforestation, which is responsible for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Make sure your home is forest friendly by visiting greenpeace Forest House.
On April 2008, greenpeace and your pressure helped change Unilever’s forest policies to stop deforestation of Kalimantan for palm oil. In just 50 days, over half a million people watched our Dove video on YouTube and DailyMotion. Now the forests need your help again. Please take a few minutes of your time to help get the European Commission to vote for a law against illegal logging.
The European Commission is expected to vote on proposed legislation to stop illegal logging on July 23rd, immediate action is vital because 80 percent of the world’s forests have already been destroyed or degraded.
The European commission has ignored the need for a law for almost five years. Even now European Commission President José Manuel Barroso is being lobbied by companies who profit from illegal timber to reject legislation.
Public pressure is absolutely essential now to urge the Commission to protect the forests and the climate. Please click here to send a message to President of the European Commission Barroso today for a yes vote on July 23rd.

If there is no law against “illegal” logging…then it is actually Legal Logging.
There are more trees on the earth now than at any other point in history…MORE TREES….than EVER…there have never been more trees in existence…
How many jobs would your proposal cost? How much money will your proposal cost? How many people will not be able to clothe themselves or feed their families due to your proposal?
People are more important than trees

Hi Steph, thanks for your comment. But, are you sure that there are more trees on the earth than ever at any other point in history? Please considering to check this link http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/forests/our-disappearing-forests
The truth is, our tropical rain forests here in Indonesia are drastically gone because of illegal logging. About the people that will not be able to clothe or feed their families, I believe that’s another issue, because there should be other jobs that they can do.

Hi shearyadi,
Juliette from Greenpeace International here. Thanks a million for blogging about this
To steph: illegal logging is illegal in the country where the trees are chopped down. It is however surprisingly legal in Europe to import that wood, so in the end, you have a major loophole encouraging in Europe something that is illegal somewhere else.
Cheers,
Juliette
