History and categories in cartoon art
My dear internet friends, this is the second post about cartoon on this blog. I have a friend contacted me about my yesterday’s post, asking me why my cartoon are less funny than the usual cartoon work she often see.
Alright, first I’d like to write short story about cartoon. According to a wikipedia article, cartoon is a piece of art, usually humorous in intent. The frist cartoon was published in the year of 1843 when Punch magazine applied the term (of cartoon) to satirical drawings in its pages, particularly sketches by John Leech.
In the modern days, with many newspaper and magazine publishers started to include these humourous (sometimes satire) drawings, cartoon art has been categorized into several category as listed below:
Gag Cartoons
This type of cartoon is mostly the kind of artwork that we found in magazines and newspapers. A single drawing, more funny and generally purpose for a joke. Sometimes gag cartoons coming with a caption beneath the drawing or a speech balloon.

Editorial/Satire Cartoons
This type of cartoon is the way a cartoonist to show their impressions and opinions about current social and/or political issues. Editorial cartoons are more serious and usually consists of satire and caricature (visual metaphor to illustrate a person/things). This cartoons often include speech balloons to add the critics or opinions related to the drawings.

Cartoon/Comic Strips
This type of cartoons are found daily in newspapers worldwide. Come with a short series of illustrations in sequence. Humor is not the most prevalent subject in cartoon/comic strips. Other themes like adventure or drama are also found in this category.
