Low-energy PUC-Rio Mediatheque University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The 2nd Regional Holcim Awards Silver 2008 Latin America for sustainable construction has won by SPBR Architects from São Paulo, Brazil with the PUC-Rio Mediatheque project.

With the purpose to celebrates innovative, future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects from around the globe, Holcim Awards provides prize money of USD 2million per three-year competition cycle to progressively generate a worldwide community of recognized practitioners of excellence in sustainable construction.

The Silver award winner, PUC-Rio Mediatheque serves different purposes: it is both the knowledge base of the adjacent university campus but also is open to the public and offers educational programs to the residents in the nearby informal settlement of Favela da Rocinha.

The building itself is an attractive landmark that demonstrating the high standard of Brazilian architecture and exploring the ultimate construction technology.

The concept of this building is driven by passive design elements such as appropriate orientation, heat insulation, shaded windows, natural ventilation and natural lighting which will contribute to a substantial reduction of the energy consumption despite the unusually high requirements regarding the interior climate for book and media preservation.

The situation of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) Mediatheque project takes into account the “two existing ground levels” as a proper arrangement for its dual program.
The ground level of this building is served the book collection and administrative offices as well as the support building. The building above it is for a Plaza that providing access to the Mediatheque public building.
