TOTEM, an art installation that talks about design
TOTEM, Transformation des Objets Trouvés de Saint-Étienne Métropole 2008, is a composition of old-used furniture that have been transformed utilising unrelated materials while following a common concept.

Each piece has been re-thought not so much based on its’ functionality but more on its’ history and inbuilt philosophy. The memory of each object has been the basis of inspiration while the use of contemporary materials underlines certain formal characteristics converting them to symbolic elements.

This installation, and the objects produced, where a result of a workshop that was organised by Thanos Zakopoulos art & design studio with the students of the school of Fine Arts in Saint-Étienne.

For that particular chairs, studio designers: Katia Meneghini & Thanos Zakopoulos are worked mainly in collaboration with external collaborators: K. Bellova, I. Furby, H.K. Lee, Z.J. Mai, A.L. Martins, M. Murinova, S. Nosko, T. Schnur, and H. Seong.

At the same time the installation represents a symbol for the tourism of the area, and the city of Saint-Étienne in particular, which has invested the last years a lot on design.
